STF FILTROS provides solutions for the Asian clam

Normal 0 21 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE The Asian clams (“Corbicula fluminea”) are exotic invading species that have a highly colonising ability and produce modifications on the ecosystem as serious as those of the zebra mussels. These species morphology is similar to that of the common cockles. This bivalve may be fifty millimeters, it is brown greenish and shows concentric folds in the shell.  DSC 0018

Its existence was detected in Spain for the first time in the Miño river in 1989 and since then it has not stopped colonising several river basins. The economic damages are related to the irrigation channels and infrastructures for channelling water. Thousands of clams by square meter affect the channels efficiency, making it difficult the water flow and also blocking off the hydraulic infrastructures and piping.

In summer  2013, members of the User Community's irrigation area in Merida contacted  STF-Filtros to get a solution for the clogged strainers due to the shells of the adult clams.

By working closely with the technicians of the User Community's irrigation area in Merida a strainer prototype was created. In order to prevent the filtering cartridge to get clogged, it was tested on site and when the testing was successful, an agreement was reached to manufacture 350 units.

Later, 100 units were manufactured for the User Community's irrigation area in Guadiana del Caudillo.

If you require any more information on this matter or our help to control the pests, please, do not hesitate to contact STF-Filtros.
